Make Zines

Wednesdays, April 27 through June 1, 6-8 PM
ZACC Classroom

Wednesdays | April 27 through June 1 | ZACC Classroom | 6-8 PM | Taught by Erika Fredrickson | $125

Jigsaw. Bust. Bitch. FactSheet5. Maximum RocknRoll. Cometbus. These were some of the zines that hit the alternative newsstands of the 1990s and became the treasured reading material of a post-punk generation. But zines – small circulation publications of various kinds – have been around since the 1930s and have continued on, even in today's digital age. This class for older teens and adults will focus on the old-school, cut-and-paste, photocopied approach to zine-making. Taught by Erika Fredrickson (who produces the Garden City Beast zine), the class will be a place to share favorite zines and explore the sometimes crude, edgy, provocative and silly aspects of a publication culture that rebelled against mainstream presses and supported freedom of speech. Attendees will learn a little zine history, meet local zinemakers (past and present), and come up with their own zine concept, which they will produce as a final project. They will also have an opportunity to contribute to the next Garden City Beast if desired.
