Maximum RocknRoll. Cometbus. These were some of the zines that hit the alt
ernative newsstands of the 1990s and became the treasured reading material
of a post-punk generation. But zines – small circulation publications of
various kinds – have been around since the 1930s and have continued on\, e
ven in today's digital age. This class for older teens and adults will foc
us on the old-school\, cut-and-paste\, photocopied approach to zine-making
. Taught by Erika Fredrickson (who produces the Garden City Beast zine)\,
the class will be a place to share favorite zines and explore the sometime
s crude\, edgy\, provocative and silly aspects of a publication culture th
at rebelled against mainstream presses and supported freedom of speech. At
tendees will learn a little zine history\, meet local zinemakers (past and
present)\, and come up with their own zine concept\, which they will prod
uce as a final project. They will also have an opportunity to contribute t
o the next Garden City Beast if desired.
