Growing up is overrated. Maturity is often measured by our ability to 'color in the lines' — by our sense of boundaries and whether or not we stay within the guidelines imposed on us by our family, society, and the greater world. Children are creative geniuses because they have not yet learned about these restrictions, and because they aren't expected to follow most of them anyway. They are free to think radically and react openly to the world as it unfolds to them. We would all do well to remember the wonder and curiosity we felt as children. In freeing our brains from the unneccessary bonds of adulthood, we could all experience a rush of creativity and energy normally reserved for brand new humans — a familiar yet distant feeling of youthful wonder and excitement.
We value the artistic contributions of youth at the ZACC, alongside those of adults, for just this reason. Our Main Gallery is host to both adult and youth artwork, and works by many bright spirits who have often been neglected in the mainstream art world. Our Youth Gallery is a permanent feature in the new ZACC, hosting works by these creative geniuses exclusively. We're lucky to get a glimpse of the world as it is to them, newly unfolding with each moment and bursting with life.
