Why We Rock!

Printfest

Did you know that in 2009, just before we became a non-profit, the ZACC was a finalist for an Innovative Space Award from LINC (Leveraging Investments in Creativity)?

LINC is a ten-year national initiative to improve the conditions for artists working in all disciplines.

The Innovative Space Award is a competitive national awards program developed by LINC and MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning in partnership with both the MetLife Foundation and the Ford Foundation. The program emphasizes the role affordable artist space projects play in community revitalization and socially progressive community development, and will increase awareness of replicable, sustainable approaches and models. We didn't win, but we were one of 15 final models from around the nation! You should be proud Missoula.

Access to affordable space plays a significant role in the ability of artists to produce artwork and contribute to the fabric of communities. In particular, it is the need for work space—such as studio/rehearsal space for making work, conducting business, gathering to critique work, performing and presenting work, and (for some) storing work—that distinguishes artists from most other occupational groups. Yet, despite research from public policy experts such as the Urban Institute demonstrating that the presence of art, artists, arts and cultural institutions, and other artist spaces is an important and documented indicator of a vibrant, healthy community, access to affordable work space—and affordable living space—continues to be a critical concern for many artists.

These are some reasons why we've been told we rock:

We provide workshops/classes for community members
We provide regular open studio events and studios for artists to work
Community issues inform our organization's work
We collaborate with other community organizations and agencies
Community members provide direct feedback/direction on our organization's programming and efforts
Community members are in board and advisory positions
We were founded through a grassroots effort
Community goals/issues are acknowledged in our programming
Our organization provides facilities, spaces, and resources for community use

Believe in our mission and our programs?
Donate or take a tour! That is how we keep our doors open and programs running!
